Nail biting realism is one of the chief attractions of the novels of Patricia Cornwell. Her creativity and selection of words are so amusing that the reader is not going to close the book until he finishes it. One of the salient features in her novels is the accurate description of things and events that she had carefully developed over the years. This may be because of her experience while working in Virginia Chief Medical Examiners Office, where she witnessed a number of autopsies. Apart from that she had also worked as a Voluntary Police Officer for three years and she had often worked at nights that made her familiar with many incidents that are ideal for a great writer. Moreover, Patricia Cornwell had undertaken the laborious and intensive training at the FBI Academy in Quantico in Virginia and later she ran a grueling obstacle course for recruits, “the Yellow Brick Road”. In many of her stories one can see the elements that come out from her own experience and she had portrayed it in the most exciting way that captures everyone’s eyes.
“Cruel and Unusual” is undoubtedly one of the striking pieces to all the readers. The remorseless killer Temple Gault is in turn the most interesting murderer in her novels. One may find some similarities in this character with real-life child serial killer John Joseph Joubert IV, but Patricia Cornwell rejects the notion and clarifies that Temple Gault is only a fictitious character. However, a close examination of the character in the novel made the reader suspect that there are some close resemblances with the character and the serial killer.
