Turtle Power is alive! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle phenomenon is stronger than ever, even after more than twenty years after its creation by two independent comic book artists, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. With the success of the latest TMNT movie released in 2007, the ninja turtles proved that they are not just a fad of the late 80’s and the early 90’s that launched a licensing empire that released several television series and feature films, various video games, and a wide range toy figures and other merchandise.

As a proof of loyal fans’ continued support to these pop culture icons, students at Rutgers University painted the town green after setting a Guinness World Record on April 10, 2008 for the world’s largest get together of people who are dressed as ninja turtles. They accomplished this goal when a total of 786 students and members of the university community, each wearing a TMNT costume, gathered at the university recreation center in New Jersey. Truly, this display of turtle affection was so, to use one of the ninja turtle’s catchphrases, totally awesome!
A TMNT costume is a great costume idea. It’s a cool thing to wear for Halloween or any costume parties. Imagine what a hit you will be, walking around dressed as one of the turtles, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael or Donatello.
It’s quite easy to create a TMNT costume on your own using simple materials like paper, cardboard and colored pieces of cloth, fashioning them to create an authentic costume. But if you are not the handicraft type of person or you don’t have the time to create one, there are teenage mutant ninja turtle costumes available for sale in some specialty shops and over the Internet.
Once you have decided how to come up with a TMNT costume, you must choose which of the ninja turtles you would be dressing as. While the four turtles are identical in appearance, there are some ways to tell them apart:
Leonardo, the leader, wears a blue mask and wields a pair of katana blades (for your outfit, it is advisable to stick with wooden or plastic swords). Raphael, the resident hot-head and bad boy, wears a red mask and has a pair of sai as his weapon. The easy-going and fun-loving turtle of the group, Michelangelo wears an orange mask. His weapon is a paor of nunchacku. Lastly, Donatello wears a purple mask. A brilliant scientist and engineer, his weapon of choice is the bo staff. The colors of their masks are the same with their respective knee- and elbow-pads.
It would surely be a blast to be a ninja turtle for a day. You get to bust those karate moves and stuff. Of course, a TMNT costume is not complete without any of the four turtle’s weapons. But you must be careful wielding the plastic weapons that come with your ninja turtle costume. Whether you dressed as Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo or Donatello, have fun and enjoy showing off your ninja moves.
