Gibson Guitar Les Paul

Gibson Guitar Les Paul

One of the most unique types of guitars is the Gibson Guitar Les Paul. This guitar first came out during the early 50’s and it was popularized by the very famous guitarist of those times - Les Paul. The extent of his contribution in the design of the guitar is a bit controversial as there are many different accounts on it, but nevertheless it is a masterpiece of a guitar and one that was much appreciated by guitar players when it was released.

The Gibson Guitar Les Paul is basically a Solid Body Electrical Guitar and it was developed as part of a collaboration between Gibson Guitar Corporation and Les Paul. Not only was Les Paul a guitarist, he was also an innovator and he had already designed and hand-built his own guitar – which he called the Lo. It was the first solid-body Spanish guitar ever built.

When the Gibson Guitar Les Paul guitar was first released it was brought out in two models – one was the Regular Model and the other was the Custom Model. The regular Model was named the Goldtop. Its frame was made out of Maple and Mahogany and it was one of the heavy guitar models of those times and released between 1952 and 1957. Though it was quite a plain looking guitar, it offered exemplary sound quality.

The Custom Model was different from the regular Model because of its finish and sophisticated qualities. Over the coming decades, Les Paul moved on from just these two models and started to created guitars that suited a variety of skills and price requirements. The only arena that it did not cater to was the novice guitar market as it was already taken by the Melody Maker model. Interesting Les Paul Guitar Models to be noted are Junior (1954-1960) and TV (1955-1960), Special (1955-1960), 1961 Les Paul SG, and Gibson Les Paul Studio (1983). In 1986, a variety of Les Paul Models were introduced which catered to different types of user requirements and as a result many of the classic features in models seen thus far, were replaced with something new and different. However, this did not stop the demand for the older version and as a result Gibson Les Paul Guitar was brought out in many different versions ranging from the basic version (re-issued) to the most modern type with digital electronic features.

The most recent models released include the Gibson Les Paul Standard, Gibson Robot Guitar and Gibson Dark Fire. Many famous personalities have popularized the Les Paul Guitar over the years such as Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Mick Taylor, Peter Green to name a few. At the age of 93, Les Paul still prefers to use his own Les Paul Guitar when giving performance onstage in New York City.

Over the years, a genuine Les Paul guitar has become a valuable asset and actually very expensive guitar to have. An estimated 2000 such guitars are still around and a very good and well-maintained gibson guitar les paul can fetch something between $200,000 and $750,000, which is quite a significant amount. However, it is possible to get a piece from that era by purchasing a re-issues version, which will cost something between $3,000 and 6,000.
