Though the simple adjective “pretty” comes to mind when viewing the 2009 BCBG Max Azria swimwear collection, it is not a grand enough modifier to describe this delectable collection of bright swimsuits that will be lighting up beaches this summer. BCBG swimwear takes the simple halter top/bikini bottom platform, and adds gorgeous swirls of color, small, feminine ruffles, and sporty blocks of color in a collection of suits that demand attention without overpowering their wearer.
Bikini tops and bottoms are sold separately for the best fit, and cost from $48 to $86.
But never fear, fans of one-piece swimwear! BCBG also offers one-piece suits. They may be more covered up than a bikini, but they’re no less appealing. The BCBG chalk-striped one-piece has a halter top that ties behind the neck and a hook closure at the back that supports even a generous bust with its fully lined cups with removable pads. Below the back closure, the suit is deeply scooped. A similar version in a solid persimmon-color will definitely make a splash at the beach or pool.
A more daring one-piece option of the BCBG swimwear is the macramé cut-out maillot in black or deep purple. From the back, this clever suit looks like a bikini! It may be a one-piece swimsuit, but it is definitely not shy.
BCBG also makes gorgeous cover-ups that can also be worn as casual summer dresses, with their smocked bodices and empire waists. The BCBG “poppy” dress is a short dress in a bright red and white print that would make the perfect cover-up for a strapless swimsuit. The “Sailboats” swimwear cover-up is made from a silk-cotton blend and has a smocked bodice with a lightly ruffled top for a not-too-tight fit. For a sportier take on cover-ups, the racer-backed dress in stripes of muted greens and purples delivers comfort and style. Sleeveless and scoop-necked, it is a playful, pop-art option for the beach.
An embroidered, 100% silk cover-up in a bright sunflower yellow has pin-tuck detailing at the bust and back, and a button closure on the side. A short, white strapless viscose dress with gathering detail under a ruffled bust ties in the back. This piece easily does double duty as a swimsuit cover-up or as a great partner to a pair of jeans.
The BCBG look is based on feel-good fabrics and cuts, on the theory that if you’re comfortable in great clothes, you radiate confidence. And that’s a roundabout way of saying that BCBG swimwear is not only beautiful and well made, but eminently accessible and wearable by women of all ages.
