Born in Tunisia, designer Max Azria moved to Paris as a teen, and there designed women’s clothing during the 1970s. He moved to the United States in 1981 and launched his BCBG Max Azria line in 1989. BCBG stands for the Parisian slang “Bon Chic Bon Genre,” which means “good style good attitude.” Although headquartered in Beverly Hills, the BCBG Max Azria flagship store is in New York City, and his designs are sold around the world including the BCBG dresses. Famous American women like Jessica Simpson and Lindsay Lohan have embraced his designs, which are definitely not for the shy wallflower.
BCBG is known as a blend of European sophistication and American spark, and he has been presenting his collections at New York Fashion Week since 1996. With 65 boutiques in North America, Asia, and Europe, BCBG now includes women’s ready-to-wear, three junior clothing lines, shoes, sunglasses, handbags, and swimwear. For men, BCBG offers casual wear, outerwear, suits, and shoes.
Beautiful, feminine, and seductive are adjectives that come to mind when viewing BCBG’s line of dresses. This designer knows the secrets to making dresses that drape beautifully across the female form, including dresses that are cut on the bias, causing them to cling “just right” – not too loose and not too tight. BCBG dresses also possess a rich, textured quality, achieved with innovative dyeing techniques.
Though his latest dresses feature conservative necklines, banded bottoms, and somber tones, they are far from dull or frumpy! The combination of lush, draped fabric coupled with the female form celebrates femininity without apology.
BCBG dresses in 2009 feature above-the-knee hemlines coupled with high necklines, and the signature, figure flattering BCBG draping. Trapeze-cut dresses come in a kaleidoscope of colors: bright pinks, corals, and blues. But BCBG doesn’t forget about the classic Little Black Dress (LBD). Max Azria’s versions feature classic lines with a kick: an LBD with a pink satin skirt, or topped with a gorgeously draped cropped satin jacket with three-quarter length cape sleeves.
Dresses for work include classic blouse and pencil skirt styles in blacks and whites suitable for all ages. Prices for the Spring 2009 collection range from under $100 for a sleeveless sweater dress to nearly $600 for a formal, ombre embellished halter dress. In the world of haute couture, where even simple garments can cost over $1,000, BCBG Max Azria has gathered a loyal following by offering cutting edge European style blended with a uniquely American attitude at prices that even non-celebrities can afford.
