Producer Harvey Weinstein has announced that actress Anne Hathaway will play Judy Garland in both stage and screen adaptations of the biography Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland, written by Gerald Clarke. Director and writer for the productions are yet to be announced.
Hathaway, who made her name in family films such as The Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted went on to play Meryl Streep’s unwilling minion in The Devil Wears Prada in 2006. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her 2008 film Rachel Getting Married.
Weinstein said that Hathaway is “brilliantly talented” and, “She will be a true class act in this challenging role.”
Judy Garland became famous for her role as Dorothy in the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, and went on to win a Grammy. She was also nominated for two Academy Awards for A Star is Born and Judgment at Nuremberg. Garland’s personal life was disastrous, however. Married five times, Garland tried to kill herself on more than one occasion, and battled drug addiction. She died from an accidental overdose in 1969.
Hathaway has also recently signed to star in Tim Burton’s version of Alice in Wonderland, to be released in 2010.
